Authors usually write with a purpose in mind. Why do you think Spinelli wrote a book about this "loser?" What's the point? What are we supposed to learn from this book?

In Jerry Spinelli's book, Loser, Donald Zinkoff's classmates often say things to him that seem cruel. Has anyone ever called you a name you didn't deserve to be called? How did this make you feel? How do you think Zinkoff would respond to being called this name?

Literary Reflections 07-08

Welcome to this online literature forum for the school year. This fall our first literature choice was a book called Loser by Jerry Spinelli. This is a work of realistic fiction, selected because I felt it had a sincere and poignant message for students and adults as well. Together, we discovered that the author helped make this story come alive through the creative use of simile and metaphor. Some of the lessons for the book can be found online here.

EDT 546 7/6/07 Catching Up!

This post follows a week of open lab for the EDT 546 graduate students while Dr. Christie and a few of the interns attended the National Educational Computing Conference in Atlanta, Georgia USA. We had a great time learning about the latest in hardware/software that is available to teachers and students. The keynotes were awesome, especially Dr. Tim Tyson, a middle school principal who closed the conference by sharing some fabulous movies created by Mabry Middle School students.
It appears that the ASU Jr. Interns who were able to help did a great job working without me! (and that is a teacher's proudest moment, for sure)

At the top of this post is a web of ideas for the Jr. Intern podcast we talked about in class. I am hoping that we can get together soon so we can reflect on your experiences and create this final project. For now, consider how you would respond to these prompts and take some time to enjoy the rest of your vacation. EDT 546 3rd Day Wed Reflections

Today Dr. Christie presented iMovie and GarageBand to the class. The teachers began their plan for using what they have learned to create multimedia lessons for their own classrooms. Your knowledge and experience will help these teachers create lessons above and beyond their expectations during the rest of this class. :-)
You may also learn new things about the programs because we are working in iLife 6- the latest version of the iApps.
BTW- A teacher from Bellair (Mrs. Goebel) is working in Moldova during the summer and bogging the adventure! You can follow it here.

I have an idea of something we might try for a quick iMovie- it could involve all the interns- you would each have to think of what you might want to be when you grow older- and then bringing in props to create that scenario tomorrow! We can work on the strybrd & begin filming Thurs pm

Welcome to the beginning of Dr. Christie's second summer class: EDT 546 -"Using Multimedia in Presentations." This is my favorite because I am always amazed at the creativity that teachers can apply to their lessons if they have the time and the right equipment. As Jr. Interns, you will be a huge help to the teachers during this class because of your knowledge and skill with programs like iMove and GarageBand. Hi Jr. Interns!
We are winding up our training session here for the AZ K12 Center. It has been a quick four days! Our class had twenty-five teachers and all but one has burned their project to a DVD so they can use it in their classroom next year with students. Tomorrow we will share the projects and bring the week to a close with a final presentation by Tony Vincent.
It's been exciting and fun to help teachers use so much technology! I know their classrooms will begin to change next year when they use some of the technologies they have learned.
Now.......let's get to the teachers that you are helping........ :-)

I imagine that today's (double) class contained quite a bit of work time for the teachers. I hope you had the chance to gain a good deal of experience in your reverse-mentoring role. :-)

You are all very familiar with using a camera for conventional use. In EDT 545, Dr. Christie asks the teachers to create a digital project that goes beyond just posting pictures and dares to use images to teach an idea or illustrate a concept. This seems hard at first, but I have seen some interesting examples of ways to teach numbers, shapes, etc. using real life examples.
first example is a counting lesson
second example is a Virtual Tour created with PPT and a camera
third example uses thumbnails to teach emotions
Explore these and think of what you might create.

Today the class discussed considerations such as Copyright and Plagiarism when creating content for the WWW. The graduate students are each creating something called a WebQuest to use in the classroom with their own students.
