This novel, written by Christopher Paul Curtis in 1995, touches on a number of themes. Please include specifics from our classroom discussions, the film we viewed about MLK and what you learned about the tumultous 1960's to write a brief paragraph discussing one of those themes. Include at least two instances from Curtis's novel that support the theme you have chosen to explore.

A theme in The Watsons Go to Birmingham I found was violence. Two examples of this is when Larry Dunn stoe Kenny's gloves and Byron took them back and smacked Larry and threw him into a fence over and over again. Another example would be when Byron threw a cookie at a mourning dove, hit it in the chest, and killed it. This is a serious theme in and out of the book. I chose this theme because I saw it mainly in The Watsons Go to Birmingham.

One example of these themesis when Byron is beating up Larry Dunn because he took Kenny's gloves.

16th St. Baptist Church and killed four little girls.

In the book "The Watsons Go to Birmingham", one of the themes are bravery. Kenny shows bravery when he goes into the bombed church to look for joey when no one else was brave enough. Also Byron shows bravery when he jumps into the water to save Kenny from the "whool Pooh" (or whirl pool).

One of the themes in The Watsons Go to Birrmingham-1963 is friendship. You can find this when there are new kids on the bus. Kenny became their only friend. There is another area where Kenny's old "friend" LJ Jones and he would steal his dinosaurs, wich means he wasn't much of a friend.

In this book one of the themes are supportive family. One of the examples of this is when Byron was supporting Kenny by saving him from the whirl pool. Another example was when Byron was telling Kenny it was ok that he didn't fight off the wool pooh when it had Joey.

Violence happens most in Watsons when the bomb blows up in the church, but Byron shows violence every day including when he pretends to make a movie called the "Great Carp Escape".Byron also shows violence when he punches Kenny. violence is shown alot in Watsons, but most in the church bombing. signed,BK
In this book, one of the themes is frinedship.
One example of this theme is Kenny and Byron. In the beggining they fought alot but near the end they became friends.
Another example of this theme is Kenny and Rufus. When Rufus first got on the bus all kids were mean to him except for Kenny. Kenny and Rufus became friends. Rufus came over to Kenny's house sometimes and stole dinosaurs from Kenny. Kenny eventually gave all his dinosaurs to Rufus but then he decided to try to get them back.

In this book one of the themes are segragation and racism. During the time of the Watson's family trip alot of segragation and racism was happening in the south. One example of this is of course the bombing of the all black 16th Street Baptist Church. Another example would be when Byron and Kenny are releiving themselves in the woods and Byron tells Kenny to watch out for "red-necks" who will shoot them because they are black. This was a great book to read because you can learn from it and enjoy it at the same time.

The theme I chose from The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963 was friendship. Friendship plays an important role in this story because it helps Kenny (the main character) feel that he fits in more. Kenny shares a friendship with Rufus and Cody, they are two boys from the south who also can't seem to fit in well. It is because of friendship that Kenny doesn't feel lonely. Byron (his brother)is also a huge part of this story. Byron is a major bully at the beginning , but he becomes more of a friend to Kenny near the end. I think that if there was no friendship there would be no fun in the story.

My theme for The Watsons Go To Birmingham is segregation. The children don't realise how bad segregation is until they are in Alabama. Segregation is apperant when they can't stop at just any hotel because most hotels are for whites only. If I was in a situation like that I would fight for freedom of black people. I would start non-violent protests, and help other people. I would write articals and try to persuade other people to be against segrigation. It doesn't mater whats on the outside, it's what's on the inside. HP
